Juliet Marillier

Juliet Marillier was born and brought up in Dunedin, New Zealand and now lives in Western Australia. She is the author of eleven historical fantasy novels for adults and two for young adults. Her books have been translated into many languages and have won a number of awards including the American Library Association’s Alex Award, the Aurealis Award (three times), the Sir Julius Vogel Award and France’s Prix Imaginales. Juliet is a member of the druid order OBOD (the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids). She lives in a hundred year old cottage which she shares with a small pack of waifs and strays.

Juliet’s love of folklore, fairytales and mythology and her passion for history make their way into all her writing. Although her books contain elements of the uncanny and fantastic, her stories focus on characters, relationships, and life journeys.

Juliet is currently working on the sixth book in the Sevenwaters series, to be published by Roc in 2012. She has completed the first novel in a new series for young adults, the Shadowfell series. This book will be published by Knopf, also in 2012.

In his presentation Dr. Rotz asks, ~Did you inherit a depression-era “save everything” philosophy? He will address the struggle to manage clutter in personal & the work environment, acknowledging that it can lead to frustration, stress & the feeling of being chronically disorganized. For some, the inability to limit, organize & let go of “stuff” can lead to low self-esteem, shame, compromised relationships and occupational difficulties. Information about Mina:
I was born and raised in Iran and immigrated to the US. I attended architecture school and worked in the field. But I have been writing since I didn’t know how to write! I remember when I was five instead of taking my afternoon naps I rode my red tricycle for hours around the flower pad of our garden. I sang songs and made up stories about insects, flowers, wheels, clouds and the garden wall. Later when I learned to write I kept a poetry notebook and a journal. I wrote plays and directed the neighborhood children to act my plays at gatherings.

Although my first two published books happen to be children’s books, I write poetry, prose and screenplays too. To be published by major trade publishers and noticed through actual industry awards is an exceptional opportunity which has allowed me to use my voice and talk about my favorite subjects; peace, tolerance and understanding.

I’m a firm believer that humans are capable of understanding their immense similarities and that liberty and peace can be achieved through learning about each other.
